Probably way too much. Like you said, it was a bit of a labor of love, as I have some fond memories of this game. You could get a similar result in much less time (and for much less money) by just getting some sheet protectors and three ring binders. After dis-assembling the books you can put the pages in the sheet protectors, and the sheets in the binders, and you've got it all protected from wear and tear.
