5th Texas Infantry

Last week I finished painting my third unit of 10mm GHQ Confederate Infantry figures. These are meant to represent the 5th Texas. I used mostly the same method as the previous infantry units, which you can see here, with the following exceptions.

First, I used a greater variety of colors on the pants in order to make them look a little more ragged. I alternated between several pant colors: Snakebite Leather, Beastial Brown, Shadow Grey, Fortress Grey, and a light blue-grey color I don't know they name of. Second, these figures are in a marching pose, and are wearing backpacks and blanket rolls. The backpacks I painted Dark Flesh with Bleached Bone straps. The blankets I did in a mix of Snakebite Leather, Shadow Grey, and Fortress Grey. I also again hand painted the Texas flag. For this unit, I inked them all with brown ink, except for the Colonel who I used black ink on.

Here are some pictures of the results. Click on the pictures for a larger view.

I think they turned out pretty well, but I'd like to find some different colors to use for the blanket rolls that will stand out a little from the rest of the uniform at a distance, but won't look too outlandish to be realistic. I'll have to try some different colors on the next unit, which will also be in the marching pose.

  1. Very nice !

As for blanket rolls, here are some colors that I've decided to go with:

    GW Scab Red
    GW Bubonic Brown
    GW Camo Green
    GW Scaly Green

Though I haven't inked them, I'm alternating Codex Grey and Desert Yellow for pants and shirts between regiments, so I think the above blanket roll colors kind of work with those. I don't think there is much evidence for red blanket rolls in the infantry, but it looks good for some reason on Reb miniatures, so I'm going with it. Scab Red is one of the more muted reds by GW. Shoulder straps are also Bleached Bone.

Very helpful information at your blog.

  3. Thank you!

Jim, I like your choice of blanket colors. I think I will try some of those out on my next regiment.
